History

  • In 1980, from the Faculty of Nursing, at the Medical University of Nicolaus Copernicus, a Rehabilitation and Biological Regeneration Centre was established, to provide both practical and theoretical teaching program “Medical Rehabilitation” for the Nursing studies.
  • The legal basis for opening the Physiotherapy studies at the Faculty of Healthcare of the Jagiellonian University Collegium Medicum was created by the Main Council of Higher Education, introducing Physiotherapy to the list of degree courses. The first enrolment in took place in 1998. In the following years, the number of students starting their education in physiotherapy gradually increased.
  • On June 28, 2000, the Rehabilitation Clinic was established as an independent unit in order to provide a teaching base for the implementation of the curriculum. By the decision of the Senate of the Jagiellonian University on July 10, 2000, the Department of Physiotherapy at the Jagiellonian University Medical College was established.
  • On July 4, 2001, in Krakow, an agreement was signed between the Małopolska Voivodeship, represented by the Marshal of the Małopolska Voivodeship, Marek Nawara, and the Vice-Marshal of the Małopolska Voivodeship, Andrzej Sasuła, and the Jagiellonian University, represented by the Rector of the Jagiellonian University, prof. Franciszek Ziejka, PhD and the Vice-Rector of the Jagiellonian University for Collegium Medicum, prof. Marek Zębala, PhD. The agreement focused on taking joint actions to change the education system in case of the profession of physiotherapy technician.
  • Under the agreement, the Medical Vocational College No. 4 in Krakow, located at 12 Koletek Str., educating physiotherapy technicians, was terminated, and the teaching staff, in accordance with Art. 23 of the Labour Code, on September 1, 2001 became academic teachers of the Department of Physiotherapy at the Jagiellonian University Medical College.
  • In response to the social demand in the field of physiotherapy, enrolment in Physiotherapy was increased and, by Senate’s resolution, on April 19, 2006, the Institute of Physiotherapy of the Jagiellonian University Collegium Medicum was established, providing full-time education at 1st and 2nd degree studies.
  • Starting from the 2011/2012 academic year, the Institute of Physiotherapy has been educating in the field of Physiotherapy in extramural 2nd-degree studies.
  • In relations to the change in the mode of training of physiotherapists resulting from the adoption of the Act on the Profession of Physiotherapist on 25 September 2015, starting with the 2017/2018 academic year, the Institute of Physiotherapy began providing education in the field of Physiotherapy with a full-time basis uniform MA studies.
